How to clean a fabric couch at home

A couch absorbs everything — body oils, spilled coffee, dust and pet hair. You don't need a professional every time. Here's a safe home method that works on most South African lounge suites.

Check the care code first

  • W — water-based cleaner is safe. Most modern fabric couches.
  • S — solvent only. Do not use water; call a professional.
  • WS — either water-based or solvent is fine.
  • X — vacuum only. No liquid at all.
  • No label? Test on a hidden patch at the back and wait an hour before doing the whole couch.

Step-by-step deep clean

  1. Remove cushions and vacuum everything, including the crevices and under the seat base.
  2. Lift pet hair with a rubber glove or a damp cloth wiped in one direction.
  3. Mix a light dilution of Gosh Multipurpose Cleaner with warm water — weaker than you think; you can always repeat.
  4. Test on a hidden section and wait for it to dry before continuing.
  5. Dip a cloth, wring it out until barely damp, and wipe one panel at a time. Never soak the fabric.
  6. Work stains from the outside in with a soft brush so you don't spread the ring.
  7. Wipe over with a second cloth dampened in clean water to lift residue.
  8. Dry with a fan or open windows. Don't sit on it until fully dry, and keep it out of direct sun to avoid fading.

Common stains

  • Coffee and tea: blot immediately, then treat with diluted cleaner from the outside in.
  • Grease and food oil: sprinkle bicarb, leave 15 minutes, vacuum, then clean.
  • Pet accidents: blot dry, clean, then dry thoroughly — moisture left behind is what causes lingering smell.
  • Ink: dab, never rub; ink spreads with pressure.

Keeping it clean

Vacuum weekly, rotate and flip the cushions monthly, and treat spills within minutes rather than hours. A quick monthly wipe-down means you'll only need a deep clean twice a year.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a multipurpose cleaner on a couch?

On water-safe (W or WS) fabric, yes — diluted and applied with a barely damp cloth. Always test a hidden area first.

How do I clean a couch without a steam cleaner?

Vacuum thoroughly, then wipe panel by panel with a well-wrung cloth and diluted cleaner, followed by a clean-water wipe and good air drying.

How often should a couch be deep cleaned?

Twice a year for most homes, or every three months with pets or small children.
